Japanese shares fell after capping their worst week since March as electronics and automakers weighed on the broader market, offsetting gains in energy stocks.
The Topix index declined to the lowest level since April 12, extending a 2.5% loss last week.
Automakers dropped after US President Donald Trump threatened to impose 20% tariff on cars imported from the European Union.
Oil-related stocks climbed after crude prices surged.
Friday as OPEC said it would boost output by less than what some investors had anticipated.
